About Ben

I have been working in professional imaging since 2011, when I moved to Portland to pursue a career as a commercial photographer. In late 2011, I began working with the Portland Art Museum, where I was tasked with constructing an in-house digital photo studio and implementing the resulting workflows, and training staff in digitization processes and procedures. After working on hundreds of commercial shoots for dozens of photographers, I decided to accept a full time position at PAM in 2016. The position expanded to include exhibition documentation and Conservation specific traditional and scientific imaging of collection objects.

The position continued to grow, fulfilling national and international publication requests, receiving grant funding for future projects, and expanding the museum's studio capabilities for scientific imaging to include UV/IR spectrum photography, photogrammetry and RTI.

In 2021 I joined Digital Transitions, the preeminent supplier of digitization solutions to the cultural heritage market, as a Cultural Heritage Technical Specialist. In addition to installation and training new users in digitization best practices, I develop educational curriculum and materials for a wide range of user groups.

As an active member in several professional imaging organizations, I was the Chair of the Museum Computer Network (MCN)’s Digital Imaging Special Interest Group from 2018-2020. I have presented at several conferences on a range of cultural heritage  imaging topics, including focus stacking, optimizing studio spaces in small museums and image request workflows.
